Count Crowley vol. 2: Amateur Midnight Monster Hunter

When we last saw Jerri Bartman, she was settling into her role as Count Crowley, host of the Friday Night Scream Feature show on her family’s local network.  She had also just killed a zombie in her brother’s office and was that much closer to becoming appointed as the new monster hunter around town.  This is in addition to her new commitment to start attending AA meetings, the first of which reunited her with the werewolf who tried to attack her on her first day as Count Crowley.  The catch there is that this guy doesn’t want to be a werewolf and actually wants Jerri to use her monster-hunting know-how to take him down.

After talking about this series in the solicitations for a while, I finally got around to reading the first volume a couple months ago.  I liked what I read there and here we are.  If there’s one bad thing to say about vol. 2 it’s that it doesn’t take the story to the next level.  The writing from David Dastmalchian and art from Lukas Ketner are much on the same level as they were in vol. 1.  Which means that you get some solid character writing and storytelling with art that makes the werewolves (and vampires) look appropriately creepy.

Jerri is still an interesting trashfire to see in action and I do appreciate the effort made by the creators to show her getting her life back in order even as she maintains the rude ‘tude from vol. 1.  I just wish that the story had more to offer in terms of surprises and worldbuilding.  We at least get a decent cliffhanger at the end of this volume to lead into the currently-being-serialized vol. 3 and one that will hopefully see this amateur midnight monster hunter finally be given the recognition she deserves.
