The Man From Maybe
“Weird Work” was a miniseries that lived up to its name with writer Jordan Thomas and artist Shaky Kane delivering a dementedly gonzo sci-fi take on the police procedural. It was good enough for me to keep an eye out for their next project, which turned out to be “The Man From Maybe.” The creators are turning their sensibilities towards the Western as we meet the titular Man and his partner Gopher rescuing a local town sheriff on an Earth that’s become more of a desolate wasteland like the Old West. Rescuing that sheriff gets the Man and Gopher a plumb job providing escort to a town caravan, until they wind up embroiled in a race to get a mysterious container leaking rage juice that’s being pursued by some off-world dinosaur people.
Described like that, it might sound like “The Man From Maybe” is on the same level as Thomas and Kane’s previous work. Unfortunately it’s a lot more sedate and less out there which easily makes it the lesser of the two. That does appear to be by design, though, as the story does pick up momentum and strangeness as it goes along. Moreso in the art than the writing, as the setting lends itself well to Kane’s eccentric sensibilities. The end result doesn’t make me averse to checking out future works from the creators, or even a follow-up to this one, while it does make me hope that whatever it is is more densely weird than what was delivered here.
