What Did You Eat Yesterday? vol. 23

Gilbert and Mr. Kohinata are back from their honeymoon in Spain with stories of great food and lost luggage to regale Kenji and Shiro over dinner.  This isn’t the only dinner date in this volume as our protagonists also have one with their neighbors the Tominagas where they try to guess what the husband did for a living before retirement.  There are also stories about getting a cake for New Year’s, how Kenji’s philandering former boss saw his daughter on her wedding day, and Shiro’s milestone 60th birthday.  Though he’s dreading the thought of having to wear some traditional birthday garb, Kenji has a surprise in store for him that he might appreciate a whole lot more.

I was expecting this series to revert to business as usual after the wedding gala from the previous volume, and that’s mostly what happens here.  The reason I’m writing about it is because of that “mostly” which ties a lovely little bow on all the talk about marriage that’s been going on here.  I’d say more, but it’s best you go in  (almost) as blindly as Shiro does.  I will say that this does relate just a bit to what Kenji and Shiro are wearing on the front and back covers, and it was a good call on Fumi Yoshinaga’s part to show us what those suits looked like in full color.  The nature of the cover did make me worried for a second that “What Did You Eat Yesterday?” would be ending with this volume, but I’m also glad to report that’s definitely not the case as we can expect many more stories of food, love, and life to come with these characters.
