Roadkill: A Jim Kowalski Adventure
Well, I wanted to read more works by the Fillbach Brothers and this is as far as I could go. I say this because “Roadkill” is apparently the ONLY original work they’ve published after “Maxwell Strangewell.” That’s too bad since it shows that they are singular talents (yes, I know that doesn’t really make sense but it’s still true) who deliver consistently weird and funny comics.
Jim Kowalski is a grizzled trucker working for Illuminati Trucking Inc. with his pals Geech and Rico. They’re a talking dog and crystal skull, respectively. An average day in his line of work involves hauling Cthulu cross-country back to the company hub, where Sasquatch checks him in, and then he gets a new assignment from his boss and the wizard Merlin. That’s how his latest, and most dangerous, job begins.
Only the Fillbachs would cook up a story that involves mutant giant rabbit roadkill being ground up into hamburgers and then eaten by humans and roaches who proceed to turn into psycho alien killers. Toss in a militia cult and and a gun-toting washed-up country singer and you have an entertaining recipe for disaster on your hands. The same deadpan absurdity that made “Maxwell Strangewell” so enjoyable is still quite evident here, so if you liked that then picking this up should be a no-brainer. Even if you didn’t, then this will serve as a great introduction to the delicious weirdness of the Fillbachs.
