Plush
Devin Fulcher hasn’t been having a good time as of late. It turns out that the woman he loves, who is also his fiancee, has been sleeping with one of the biggest asshole cops in town. Worse still is that she’s now pregnant with his kid, and her father, the town sheriff, is still insisting that they go through with the marriage. Sensing that his friend could use a break from it all, Levi invites Devin to the gathering he was planning on attending that night… a gathering of furries! Feeling that he has nothing to lose right now, Devin dons a fursuit and does his best to try and have some fun. That comes to an abrupt end when he stumbles out into an alley and finds three fur-suited attendees munching down on a random partygoer.
“Plush” comes to use from writer Doug Wagner and artist Daniel Hillyard, and is billed as the third part of their “Materials Trilogy.” The other two being “Plastic” and “Vinyl.” While this isn’t quite as good as the first entry, it’s a lot better than the previous one. This is down to the fact that the creators do a much better job of balancing the tone here as it’s basically a comedy with some horror/horrific elements.
Yes, the idea of cannibal furries is played for laughs here, and it’s done quite well too. Hillyard’s art is bright and energetic as always, perfect for showcasing the lighter side of terrible policemen being brutally murdered. Wagner also does an excellent job of making Devin a sympathetic protagonist, even if the romantic aspects of his story would be completely formulaic if not for the outlandish circumstances they’re happening in. Make no mistake, these circumstances are outlandish, but they make for a bizarrely entertaining good time and a good reason to hope Wagner and Hillyard keep working together after this trilogy.
